Position: Volunteer Teacher Aide

Location: Various school & library sites throughout Montgomery County

Required Time: 3-hr-long class, 3 times a week, day or evenings; ½ hr set-up time before and after each class; 1-hr weekly faculty meeting; ½ hr of weekly tutoring and other administrative duties as needed. (8.5 - 12 hrs/week for 10 weeks) Classes are starting in September.

Mission:
The Literacy Council of Montgomery County, Maryland, Inc. (LCMC) has been helping adults living or working in the county achieve functional levels of reading, writing and speaking English for past forty-five years, so that they may improve the quality of their life and their ability to participate in the community.


Project Description:
The LCMC is currently looking for volunteer teacher aides to work with a lead teacher to conduct ESL classes of multiple levels. The class size is 20 adults. The class session will be 10 weeks long, equivalent to 90 instructional hours, early afternoons and evenings.

Volunteer teacher aides will assist the lead teachers with instruction, especially working closely with adults with lower or upper language skills. Major responsibilities include working with the LCMC Intake/Assessment Specialist (IAS) to help manage learner retention by keeping current of student status and to tutor learners either one-on-one or in small groups, if necessary. Volunteers will be trained and oriented before the first day of class and be invited to participate in trainings and faculty meetings to develop and adjust curriculum and to report student status.

The course contents cover integrated language skills and general life skills based on the Maryland Content Standards for Adult ESOL and CASAS competencies.


Qualifications:
§ Experience teaching ESL to adults.
§ Experience working in a multicultural setting and with learners of multicultural and ethnic background.
§ Access to Internet/e-mail for smooth and timely communication.
§ Minimum bachelor’s degree in TESOL, English, applied linguistics or a related field preferred.
§ Experience working with learner assessment data preferred.
§ Experience working with educational standards and language competencies preferred.
