The East Bay Spanish Speaking Citizens’ Foundation Youth and Family Services (SSCF) was incorporated as a nonprofit multi-service organization in 1965. The mission of SSCF is to help Oakland families enrich their lives, embrace their heritage, and develop as civic leaders by promoting educational enrichment and civic responsibility.

Program Description:
Our Newcomer Program is designed to assist recently-arrived students in adjusting to life in Oakland. The mission of our program is to support students’ English learning, guide them toward higher education, provide academic support, create a positive social network, introduce them to Oakland/Bay Area culture and assist them in gaining access to social services. We recognize that without guidance, a strong social network and access to resources; it is easy for these students to face unnecessary hardships during this transitional period. Therefore, we strive to meet students’ academic and personal needs while fostering the development of individual interests, goals and leadership skills, in a supportive community environment.

Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Newcomer Program Coordinator and the Director of Programs, the Newcomer Program Instructor will oversee and implement the program and will supervise a part-time Tutor/Intern. The position is 12 hours per week, Monday-Thursday during the after school hours; approximately between 2:00pm-5:00pm with some morning or daytime weekly meetings. Wednesdays are minimum days and schedule will be adapted as appropriate. Program will take place at Peralta Creek Middle School in East Oakland. Time outside of program hours will be spent lesson planning, coordinating fieldtrips, scheduling workshops, maintaining participants’ files, and preparing reports and evaluations for SSCF, funders and the district. Required activities occasionally take place on Friday evenings or weekends. Position is from late August 2008 to early June 2009, excluding school closure dates.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Implementation
•Supervision and coordination of the day-to-day operations of the Newcomer Program at Peralta Creek.
•Conduct ongoing outreach, recruitment and enrollment process for participants.
• Implementation of the Newcomer curriculum, including workshop presentations, coordinating guest speakers, facilitating group discussions, leading skill-building activities, and supervising youth on fieldtrips and events.
•Develop nurturing, supportive relationships with recently arrived immigrant youth and their parents/guardians.
•Tutor youth in all academic subjects.
• Guide students in the direction of higher education by familiarizing them with the college-going process and the college experience.
•Further develop the Newcomer curriculum and the Newcomer Program’s youth development philosophy.
•Conduct monthly case management meetings with each youth participant and perform all necessary follow up services.
•Act as spokesperson for the Newcomer Program.
•Collaborate with agency-wide youth events and parent activities, and Urban Arts After School Program events at Peralta Creek.

Program Administration
•Responsible for tracking progress of the programs’ expected outcomes through the program year.
•Maintain client files, attendance and data entry for the program.
•Participate in program evaluation activities including client implementation and evaluation of self and program.
• Participate in regular SSCF staff meetings, trainings and meetings with supervisor. Also participate in regular meetings with the After School Program team, program partners, funders and the school district.

Participation in the agency development, as demonstrated by:
• Participation in all SSCF fund development efforts, special events and other SSCF-related activities, as advised by your supervisor or the Executive Director.
Other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor and/or Executive Director.

Skills and Qualifications:
•At least 2 years of higher education, Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.
•Bilingual Spanish required, native Spanish speaker preferred.
•3 years teaching experience in a class room setting or working with middle school aged youth.
• At least 2 years experience working with “at risk youth” and youth from racially, culturally, economically and linguistically diverse backgrounds required.
•Knowledge of Youth Development Principles and best practices is preferred.
•Personable and professional with clients (students), parents and other staff.
• Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail, including planning and setting priorities: time management and multi-tasking skills required.
•Must be responsible and reliable.
•Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook and Internet.
