The Spanish Speaking Citizens’ Foundation, Youth and Family Services (SSCF) was incorporated as a nonprofit multi-service organization in 1965. The mission of SSCF is to help Oakland families enrich their lives, embrace their heritage, and develop as civic leaders by promoting educational enrichment and civic responsibility.
Program Description:
Our Newcomer Program is designed to assist recently-arrived students in adjusting to life in Oakland. The mission of our program is to support students’ English learning, guide them toward higher education, provide academic support, create a positive social network, introduce them to Oakland/Bay Area culture and assist them in gaining access to social services. We recognize that without guidance, a strong social network and access to resources; it is easy for these students to face unnecessary hardships during this transitional period. Therefore, we strive to meet students’ academic and personal needs while fostering the development of individual interests, goals and leadership skills, in a supportive community environment.
Scope of Work Overview:
The English Language Development (ELD) Instructor Consultant will develop a coherent ELD literacy program as part of the Newcomer Program. The instruction takes place in a classroom setting at the Fremont Federation of High Schools.
· Administer pre- and post- language assessments that address the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills of the students
· Plan weekly ELD lessons that differentiate instruction depending on students’ proficiency levels
· Track students’ progress and adjust instruction accordingly
· Train staff and volunteers working with students in ELD strategies
Dates: Sep. 2, 2008 – June 5, 2009
Hours / Rate: 3 hours per week / approx. $80-90/week
Class hours: Tuesdays (or Thursdays) 3:15 pm-5:30 pm
Location: Fremont Federation of High Schools (Architecture Academy), 4610 Foothill Blvd., Oakland
Seeking a Professional with:
· 3 years teaching experience in a class room setting, or working with high school aged youth.
· Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
· Department of Justice Live Scan Fingerprint and TB (tuberculosis) clearance
· A college degree, or at least 48 units of college credits
