Our Organization:

The East Bay Spanish Speaking Citizens’ Foundation Youth and Family Services (SSCF) was incorporated as a nonprofit multi-service organization in 1965. The mission of SSCF is to help East Bay families enrich their lives, embrace their heritage, and develop as civic leaders by promoting educational enrichment and civic responsibility.



Program Description:

Our Newcomer Program is designed to assist recently-arrived students in adjusting to life in Oakland. The mission of our program is to support students’ English learning, guide them toward higher education, provide academic support, create a positive social network, introduce them to Oakland/Bay Area culture and assist them in gaining access to social services. We recognize that without guidance, a strong social network and access to resources; it is easy for these students to face unnecessary hardships during this transitional period. Therefore, we strive to meet students’ academic and personal needs while fostering the development of individual interests, goals and leadership skills, in a supportive community environment.



The Newcomer Program is being offered at the Urban Arts comprehensive after school program at Peralta Creek Middle School, as part of the partnership between SSCF and Peralta Creek MS.



Scope of Work Overview:

The Newcomer Program Instructor Consultant will implement the program curriculum, including English Language Development, in a class setting with approximately 15-20 eighth graders. Newcomer curriculum includes workshops given by guest speakers from other organizations, fieldtrips, and English instruction. Instructor will also develop daily lesson plans, tutor students in other topics and help with their homework.



Dates: Aug. 18, 2008 – June 5, 2009

Class hours: Mon., Tue., Thu.: approximately 2:45pm-4:30 pm.

Wed. and 2nd & 3rd Fri. approx. 1:15-3:00pm due to minimum day schedule

Location: Peralta Creek Middle School, 2101 35th Ave., Oakland, CA 94601



Seeking a Professional with:

· Bilingual Spanish required

· 3 years teaching experience in a class room setting, or working with middle school aged youth.

· Department of Justice Fingerprint and TB (tuberculosis) clearance

· A college degree, or at least 48 units of College credits
