ESL Jobs World : Position: 	ESL Teacher (Part-Time)

Location:  	Various locations in Montgomery County, Maryland

Class Time: 	Early afternoon and evening shifts for three hours, three times a week, for ten weeks (Ninety instructional hours) starting in September.

The Literacy Council of Montgomery County (LCMC) is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to helping adults in Montgomery County learn to speak, read, write and understand English.   We have been serving the community for past forty-five years.

The LCMC is currently looking for part-time ESL teachers to teach ESL to adults in Montgomery County.  The course contents are designed to provide standards-based instruction for maximum learner outcome.

Job Description:

Part-time teachers for multi-level classes will teach adults with limited English proficiency how to listen, read, write, and speak in English and to learn essential life skills needed in the community.  The course contents are based on Maryland standards for adult ESOL learners and CASAS competencies.  Instructors will play an active role in developing and adjusting curriculum while working with volunteers.

The contract for the classes is for 10 weeks, with a possibility of renewal to teach future classes on an on-going basis.  Instructors will be paid for training, prep time, & faculty meetings during each session.

Minimum Qualifications: 
§	Bachelor’s degree in TESOL, English, applied linguistics or a related field.
§	2 years of experience teaching ESL to adults.
§	Experience working with learner assessment data.
§	Experience working with standards-based instructional content.
§	Experience with standardized language assessment systems (e.g. CASAS, BEST) preferred. 
§	Understanding of and accommodations for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds and special needs of adult ESL learners.

Desired Qualifications:
§	Master’s degree in TESOL, English, applied linguistics or a related field.
§	Familiarity with MD Adult ESOL Content Standards.
§	Familiarity with assessing students with standardized language assessment systems and/or teaching the standardized competencies.

Primary Purpose of Position:  Responsible for teaching adult learners with limited proficiency in English to listen, speak, read, and write according to the Maryland state standards and assessment competencies while accommodating individual learner’s needs and goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
§	Being responsible for learner performance using data relevant to teaching and learning.
§	Being accountable for instructional content under the MD Content Standards for Adult ESOL and CASAS competencies. 
§	Making instruction engaging and meaningful for students by incorporating a variety of teaching methods, especially through interactive and communicative means.
§	Accommodating students with different learning styles, special needs, and non-academic goals.
§	Developing and adjusting curriculum and instruction based on learner needs.
§	Writing and submitting weekly lesson and unit plans and being fully prepared to teach at the scheduled time.
§	Keeping an accurate record of student progress.
§	Completing and submitting necessary paperwork in a timely manner.
§	Working with volunteer teacher aides to provide effective instruction and to ensure high learner satisfaction.
§	Working with LCMC Intake/Assessment Specialist (IAS) to assess learner performance and to take an active role in improving learner retention.
§	Taking part in professional development trainings to learn and implement best practices.
§	Attending faculty meetings on a regular basis.
§	Participating in peer observations.
§	Supervising students during class and break time.
§	Developing a strong sense of community in the classroom.
§	Following safety rules and taking reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices. 
§	Being part of a professional learning community and contributing to positive school culture that fosters respect, trust, and openness to learning, sharing of ideas and continuously improving practice.
§	Performing other related tasks as assigned by the LCMC Instructional Specialist.

Qualifications:
§	Minimum bachelor’s degree in TESOL, English, applied linguistics or a related field.
§	2 years of experience teaching ESL to adults.
§	Experience working with standards-based instructional content, especially MD Adult ESOL Content Standards and CASAS competencies, highly desired.
§	Experience working with learner assessment data and test administration preferred.
§	Experience with standardized language assessment systems preferred.
§	Knowledge of a variety of learning styles and teaching methods.
§	Experience developing and adjusting curriculum as a team.
§	Effective planning, organizational communication and interpersonal skills.
§	Understanding of and accommodations for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds and special needs of adult ESL learners.
§	High energy self-starter who is motivated and independent.
§	Commitment to and understanding of the comprehensive mission of the LCMC.
