Where you can help scientists and academicians tweak their writing to get that perfectly comprehensible and grammatically flawless research paper, thereby enabling them to get their science to the broadest possible audience.

Cactus Communications is a pioneer in the field of academic editing in India; it started out as a small company of merely 5 editors that has grown to 140. In the beginning, there was only one service offered, but now, the company offers 4 different kinds of services—editing, transcription, English tutoring, and medical writing—to international clients.

Editors at Cactus belong to diverse subject areas like medicine, nanotechnology, entomology, and computer science: everybody gets to bring something special to the table. What brings these people together is the love of science and English. Cactus is, and has always been, an exciting place to work at, with its strangely paradoxical work environment where people come to work wearing the first thing they find in their closet but are dead serious when it comes to comma placement. Although this line of work seems unconventional, it has brought a lot of people closer to their true calling and has opened opportunities for several others along related lines, be it writing, publication, or even management. We have basic- and advanced-level training programs that help editors hone their skills, and we conduct various activities to keep up with the changing trends in academic writing.

The profile of an academic editor includes familiarity with the style of academic writing, sound language skills, attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. You are required to have a background in science, either pure or applicative, at least up to the graduate level; deciphering the science sequestered in sentences is a challenging task. Experience with magazines, publishing houses, etc., is a definite plus, as is the ability to scour through online resources for referencing as well as writing style guides and publishing manuals. You must be able to work independently and in a team and are required to adhere to deadlines.

Does any of this leave time for fun at work? You’d be surprised. The atmosphere at Cactus is far from the formal corporate atmosphere you would expect. We take fun at work very seriously. We organize cricket matches and screen movies, and we even have a free-for-all intranet where you can post anything, from adverts for pet adoption to write-ups on philosophy and yoga.
