ESE - ENGLISH SCHOOL ÉVORA Small school with friendly, professional working environment, in the city of Evora (World Heritage site) in southern Portugal, offering communicative language training for children, youths and adults at all levels.
We currently have a staff of three full-time teachers, plus the teacher/director, teaching English to small groups of children (currently from age 8) and teenagers/adults up to CAE level, plus a few adults on a one-to-one basis.
We offer excellent conditions as part of a free-lance teaching contract: 17 euros/hour (= 1,768 euros/month) gross, free accident insurance cover, a minimum 24 hours' teaching per week over 9 months, and 10 days' holiday at Christmas and Easter.
We can provide assistance in dealing with the tax department and help in finding accommodation. If you have not worked in Portugal before, you will be exempt from social security contributions during the nine-month contract period. The standard of living is lower in Portugal than in many other western European countries, and a furnished studio flat may be rented for about 150 euros/month, while normal living expenses are not high. If you would like to learn Portuguese, we can help in finding tuition.
We expect teachers to be reliable, flexible, hard-working, organised, creative, lively, enthusiastic and motivated; you will use laptops and interactive Smart Boards (training provided if necessary). While a knowledge of Portuguese is not essential, it is an advantage, especially when teaching children and beginners.
Typical teaching hours are 6pm to 10pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2.30pm to 10pm on Wednesdays (including an hour's break), and 9am-1pm on Saturdays.
For each level, in keeping with the Common European Framework, there are set coursebooks, currently including the SKY and HEADWAY series. Teachers are encouraged to adapt and supplement coursebooks in accordance with students' needs and individual teaching style, using internet and school resources.
Each classroom is equipped with an interactive Smart Board, a laptop with internet access and sound system. Children upto 14 years attend 2 hours of classes a week in groups with a maximum of 10; youths/adults attend 3 hours of classes a week in groups with a maximum of 12. Students are prepared for Cambridge Young Learners Tests and exams (KET, PET, FCE, CAE and CPE).
We hope that you will rapidly become part of our team and enjoy working at the school. There exists the opportunity for professional development.
We have produced a short book entitled 'Guidelines for Teachers' which introduces new teachers to all aspects of the school.
